Special note for U.S. citizens: Due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and the United States, U.S. citizens traveling for tourism, holidays, family visits, or conferences must apply for a multiple-entry visa, as they are not eligible for an ordinary visa. This multiple-entry visa has a maximum validity of 12 months, allowing stays of up to three consecutive months per visit.

 

Important legal nuances:

 

Mandatory Insurance for Zanzibar: If your point of entry into the country is Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ), please remember that as of late 2024, it is mandatory to purchase official travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Even if you hold a valid visa and private international insurance, local authorities require this specific insurance to allow entry to the island.

 

Referral Visa Nationalities: While most countries can process the e-Visa standardly, certain nationalities (such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Lebanon, and others on the official list) are subject to a “Referral” process. This means the application must be manually approved by the Commissioner for Immigration, which can delay the process by a minimum of 2 months.

 

Transport requirement: A visa can only be applied for after purchasing a round-trip flight ticket.
